History

The inaugural meeting of the Society of Cosmetic Chemists took place in Johannesburg on 25 November 1976.

It arose through the desire of cosmetic chemists and technical administrators to get together to interchange ideas of common interest and to assist in establishing sound manufacturing techniques and principles in the industry.

A steering committee, elected by the 42 delegates present at this meeting, drew up a constitution which was presented and adopted at the first Annual General Meeting held on 17 March 1977 in Johannesburg and the Society of Cosmetic Chemists of South Africa was born.

Coschem was affiliated to the IFSCC (International Federation of Societies of Cosmetic Chemists) in 1980. National congresses of the Society take place regularly with the first being held in 1982.

All of the following recommendations by the council, adopted for consideration in their first year, have been pursued and built upon:

  •    Establishing the Society as a formidable body of standards in the Industry.
  •    Preparation of a pamphlet outlining the benefits of membership to all classes.
  •    Implementation of a Diploma Course.
  •    Formation of a publicity committee.
  •    Seek affiliation to IFSCC.
  •    Organising a programme of lectures and discussion meetings for the Society.
