Cosmetics Colour Matcher & R & D Chemist -JHB

We are looking for an ambitious Research and Development chemist with colour matching experience to join our leading beauty business. A motivated, hardworking, dedicated individual with a “can do” attitude looking to expand their career and experience.
You will be instrumental in maintaining quality and consistency of current product portfolios and development of new innovative formulations.

High level role requirements

  • Development of safe products meeting the needs of the customers/consumers/business, matching benchmark performance, claims, critical path and all relevant requirements, ensuring that all aspects of formulation and method of manufacture are accurately documented.
  • Management of stability, challenge tests, user trials, claim substantiation and external testing.
  • Work closely with the Head of R&D and Marketing colleagues on all new product briefs and liaise directly with customer contacts when required.
  • Organising and monitoring all the required testing and communicate results to marketing colleagues and the Technical Manager.
  • Maintaining accurate records relating to the development and production of safe and legal cosmetics and personal care formulations.
  • Maintaining a thorough knowledge of the cosmetic regulations and ensure all products are developed in line with safety and legal guidelines.
  • Researching global trends in color and skin care; and making relevant for African environment and climate
  • Training lab interns

    Essential Job Functions – Lab related functions

  • Match colors in various cosmetic mediums including fingernail coatings
  • Develop and verify formulas
  • Create, maintain, and organize color standards for production and QC
  • Create, maintain and organize physical laboratory notebook
  • Create, maintain and organize electronic documentation
  • Perform stability testing for color fading and product stability per GLP guidelines
  • Present new concepts and technologies to sales and marketing team as well as management
  • Interact with laboratories, sales teams and customers in other global locations
  • Identify important scale up parameters and design plant equipment to safely manufacture new pigmented formulations.
  • Provide training to lab trainees and interns (training related to processes, formulations, documentation and colour matching)

Key Responsibilities

  • Primary responsible person for colour matching on manufacturing floor
  • Working with the R&D manager on new product briefs taking responsibility for the various processes and procedures for formulation from brief through manufacture
  • Working on briefs, technologies, textures and innovations
  • Responsible for researching and developing new formulations for colour matching as and when necessary for new and existing products
  • Keep abreast of and formulate colour cosmetics in line with upcoming market trends
  • Keep up to date with and implement changes and new procedures approved within the organization.
  • Comply with and help to enforce standard policies and procedures.
  • Provide product support and other technical support to operational functions timeously and efficiently
  • Initiates stability and compatibility testing of new products as well as existing products when necessary
  • Issue formulae, method of manufacture and finished product specification of approved products
  • Compilation of product dossiers on final project approval to include all technical data on raw materials researched and used, all development formulae, the final approved formulation, the product costing, the ingredient listing, the master batch manufacturing record and any other relevant notes pertaining to the project.

  • Colour matching  — Proven knowledge and experience in matching colour cosmetics
  • Chemistry — Knowledge of the chemical composition, structure, and properties of substances and potential effects in a formulation.
  • Computer literacy— Microsoft office (Word, excel, powerpoint)
  • English — Reading and writing technical documentation
  • Production and Processing — Knowledge of raw materials, production processes, quality control, costs, and other techniques for maximizing the effective manufacture and distribution of goods.
  • Organisation & Communication – Excellent organisation and communication skills
  • Motivated – self-motivated individual and a good team worker
  • Emotional maturity


  1. Educational requirements include a high school diploma, and BSc or National Diploma in Chemistry
  2. Proven experience in formulating in colour cosmetics
  3. At least 3 or more years’ experience in Cosmetic R&D environment
  4. Experience in formulating skin and/or personal care
  5. Coschem Diploma will be an added advantage.
    The company may administer dexterity or academic tests to ensure the applicant will be able to perform duties efficiently. Required skills can include the ability to sort, test, disassemble and reassemble products or goods.
